Fabrica
Fabrica
Along the river road in the heart of Leonidio can be found the Fabrica, a building with a long history. Today a display of agricultural and sea route history of the Eastern Peloponesse can be found. The construction of The Fabrica began in 1855 and completed in 1859. It was first built and used as educationa center for the Junior School with funds provided by the residents of Leonidion. For a time it was also used as the town hall of Limneon that was situated here.
In 1924 the school building was turned into an electricity plant by Apostolis Kostakis, and a year later supplied the whole village with electricity at a time when very few towns in Greece had electricity. In other parts of same building flour mills and olive oil plants were active. Before the war in 1940 the electricity was sold to new owners but continued to supply the village.
In October 1948 during the Civil war although the plant was blown up it was soon up and working again, it would close for good in 1967.In 1987 a request from the town hall of Leonidion to turn the building into a Culture and leisure center was granted. The Culture Fabrica as it was named (keeping the original name intact) opened to the public in 2014 as the centre of agricultural and sea route history of the Eastern Peloponesse. It displays the Cultural heritage of Leonidio.
